Chocolate Glass - Kovel's Price Guide

Q: When was Chocolate glass produced?

A: Chocolate glass, sometimes mistakenly called caramel slag, was originally made in America by Jake Rosenthal at the Indiana Tumbler and Goblet Company of Greentown, Indiana, from 1900 to 1903 in the Cactus and other patterns. It was also made at National Glass Company factories.             xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Fenton Art Glass Company first made Chocolate glass from 1907 to 1915.  During the Spring-Summer of 1982, Fenton produced Chocolate glass (CK) for Levay Distributing Company.  In May 1982, a few Chocolate items including the 8223-CK Leaf and Orange Tree Rose Bowl, 8428-Ck Butterfly and Berry Bow, and 9463-CK Nativity Bell were made as turn work.  Fenton produced a nice Chocolate glass assortment illustrated with a color sheet.  Not illustrated on this sheet , but listed in Fenton records, were the two very rare Fenton Cactus Chocolate items for Levay: the 3463-CK Cruet with Stopper and the 3480-CK 8" Candy (Cracker) Jar above.
